As winter nears its end, and lockdown, we hope, is about to be lifted, it would seem from many phone calls we received during the last few months that artificial grass was very much the choice of dogs to urinate upon. The pungent smell we get especially once warmed by the sun emanates from the high ammonia level in the dog urine. This ammonia sometimes gets trapped and crystalises at the base of the plastic leaves and as the temperature rises as summer approaches, the smell will increase.
Unlike natural grass, artificial grass cannot photosynthesize. Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize nutrients from carbon monoxide and water. The plants generally use the green pigment chlorophyll and generate oxygen as a by-product. It is a complex process by which carbon dioxide, water and certain organic salts are converted into carbohydrates by green plants. The process takes place exclusively in the chloroplasts through photosynthetic pigments such as chlorophyll. It converts solar energy into chemical energy which it stores for future use.
Ammonia is the foul pungent smell as soon as it starts breaking down and gets worse as the sun begins to heat it up. Turf Pong is a formulation of bacteria and specific enzymes designed to rapidly digest ammonia the product also contains a sulphur retardant to help reduce the smell during decomposition in addition we use a world-patented perfume which attacks foul odours while airborne. Ammonia IF BREATHED IN can irritate the respiratory tract and is believed to be unhealthy if measured above 5ppm. During extensive product tests, we measured some backyards as high as 17ppm.
Our recommendation for people with dogs and artificial grass is to treat your grass now before summer really sets in. Starke Ayres have Turf Pong in both 1 liter and 5 liter containers. As a special we are giving away our excellent hand sanitizer with each 5 liter can. Sannitree hand sanitizer is 80% alcohol and 20% Aloe Forex gel to protect your skin.
